Rottnest Island

It’s been almost 25 years since we’ve been on Rottnest Island. Back then we had to kill 3 days cuz we’ve missed our flight back home and the next availability was three days later. So we headed to Rotto for scuba diving. Due to high waves there wasn’t much to see but a lot of small caves and swim troughs made the dives still fun.

Ferry loaded with bikes

This this time we intended to cycle around the island. Ik, I hate cycling… using age as an excuse we went for ebikes and man, were we glad! Even Markus who likes to bike uphill used he support. Even though the island is supposed to be flat, there are loads of little hills, sand dunes and cliffs to manage and the wind and heat kills… we’ve seen so many exhaused cyclists sitting in the shade along the road to recover, good choice.

The beaches and bays arou d the island are stunning and the water crustal clear! However, if you intend to enjoy some lazy time at the beach and still see all if them, the usual one day trip to the island is tight.

Our first Quokkas! Many people come to Rottnest Island only to see and make a selfie with this little, cute guys. This litttle Rock Wallaby is the smallest Wallaby and the reason for the islands name. First sailors who landed on the island thought they are big rats…
Just next to the light house we got to see more of them. The ones you see around the island are still wild animals and look healthy with a shiny fur. This comes from their natural food compared to the once you see in town at Thomson Bay which eat human food that makes them sick, they loose their fur and only live about 5 years compared to these ones here in the wild who can live up to 15.
Back in Thomson Bay for lunch we see Quokkas everywhere around begging for food. Luckily, most tourist respect the prohibition to feed them.
Selfie, kind of ..
Ok, I admit, they are to cute, this guy was begging for food….
…and no, I of course didn’t feed or cuddle it…
It had to go for some fruits that have fallen from the trees, much healthier.

Ok ok ok, even I had to go for a selfie…. my excuse, my colleague at work asked for it.

  1. Hey Marietta,
