OK, I admit it feels stange to write a travel blog about Samui. It’s been more than 25 years since my fist trip to the coconut island. Back then, Thailand was still a secret, bone cheap and a safe and easy place to travel. Thai people were very friendly and the food fantastic. Since than a lot has changed, prices trippled, tourists changed from travellers to package tourists, elderly european men are searching for young thai girls, the long nights in the bars where rock music played and tourists tried to beat the thai girls playing four in a row gave way to techno basses roaring along the pristine beaches. Gone are the laid back beach restaurants where one could have a nice cold Singa and a chat to strangers. Russian tourists are more present than the former Scandinavian, British and German.
Be it as it is, some good things remained… The flight via Singapore is still my favorite. Almost 11 hours sleep in a row and we arrived refreshed in Singapore. The airport is well organised and even two hours stay are by far enough time to explore some of the hidden treasors like the kaktus garden.
Once arrived on Samui it truly feels like coming home, no wonder I’ve been nod idea how many times on this island, something in between ten and twenty times… What I’ve always loved about Thailand was the food. Not only is the food heavenly it’s also served at any time of the day one could wish.
If you search a bit you’re even able to find some of the old wooden bungalows, often hidden in lush green gardens with loads of flowers.
Even tough Lamai is not the most beautiful beach because the sand just isn’t powdery enough on Samui, it’s pretty nice.
Ok, I admit after two days lying lazy at the beach I slowly became twitchy. Therefore, we decided to rent a car cuz we got too old and careful to ride motorbikes, I’ve just seen too many accidents and tourists with bandages. But, there always is a but, no chance to get a car for today, instead we found ourselfs a nice breakfast and surprisingly enough a decent coffee!
Ok then, let’s do a bit of exploring on foot…
After three days it’s time to travel on… Next destination Ko Phangan.
